How It Works
Whey is a fast-digesting, complete protein derived from milk, higher in the amino acid leucine than most other protein sources — leucine is a key trigger for muscle protein synthesis. Whey isn't nutritionally unique in what it does, though: it's a convenient, pre-portioned way to add protein to a day, functioning the same as any other complete protein source (meat, eggs, dairy, legumes) once it's digested and its amino acids enter circulation.
The Research
The research here is less about whether protein matters — it clearly does — and more about how much you need and whether timing matters as much as it's often marketed.

Timing vs. total intake: Schoenfeld BJ, Aragon AA, Krieger JW. "The effect of protein timing on muscle strength and hypertrophy: a meta-analysis," Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2013. Found that any apparent benefit of protein timed around workouts was almost entirely explained by the timed group also eating more total protein overall — not the timing itself. A companion review by the same authors suggests spreading protein across roughly 3–4 meals a day, at about 20–40g per meal, as a practical distribution — but the headline finding is that total daily intake is the dominant factor, not hitting a narrow post-workout "window."

On whey specifically: the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements describes whey as one complete protein source among many, digesting faster and higher in leucine than casein — useful attributes, but not evidence that whey supplementation itself confers a benefit beyond what the same total protein intake would provide from other whole-food sources.
Typical Dosing
Think in terms of total daily protein, not shake count: 1.4–2.0g/kg/day for most active people, up to 2.3–3.1g/kg/day for resistance-trained individuals in a calorie deficit, per the ISSN position stand above. A typical whey scoop provides 20–30g of protein — useful for filling a gap in your day's total, not a required addition on top of an already-adequate diet.
Who Should Be Cautious
Whey is derived from milk and unsuitable for anyone with a dairy allergy; those with lactose intolerance often tolerate whey isolate better than whey concentrate, which retains more lactose. Very high total protein intake sustained over time should be discussed with a doctor if you have existing kidney disease, since impaired kidneys have a reduced capacity to process protein waste products.
