What It Is
Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide analog of the first 29 amino acids of human GHRH (growth hormone-releasing hormone). Rather than supplying growth hormone directly the way injectable HGH does, it binds GHRH receptors on the pituitary gland and stimulates the body's own GH release — working through the natural feedback loop instead of overriding it.
FDA History
Sermorelin was FDA-approved under the brand name Geref — first in 1990 for diagnostic testing of pituitary function, then in 1997 for treating pediatric growth hormone deficiency. In 2008 the manufacturer, EMD Serono, discontinued the product and asked the FDA to withdraw both approvals; the withdrawal took effect in 2009. Notably, the FDA's own Federal Register determination explicitly states Geref was not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness — it was a business decision by the manufacturer.

Current Status & What Research Exists
Sermorelin is not currently FDA-approved or commercially marketed as an approved drug. It's available today only through compounding pharmacies, by prescription, typically used off-label for adult GH-boosting, anti-aging, or fitness purposes — a different use case from its original, narrow, disease-specific approvals. The human trial data behind those original approvals is decades old and specific to diagnostic testing and pediatric GH deficiency; there isn't robust modern clinical trial data supporting its popular off-label uses in healthy adults.
Known Risks
Reported side effects include injection-site reactions, transient flushing, headache, nausea, and an unusual taste sensation. There's also a theoretical concern about effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism with GH-elevating compounds generally. It's generally considered to carry a different risk profile than exogenous HGH, since it works through the body's own feedback regulation rather than overriding it — but that isn't the same as having a modern safety record for off-label, long-term adult use.
