BPC-157 has some published research behind it, but it is not FDA-approved for any use, and human clinical trial data is extremely limited. This page describes what's actually known — not dosing or usage guidance, and not a recommendation to use it. Talk to a doctor before considering it.
What It Is
BPC-157 ("Body Protection Compound-157") is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide fragment, originally sequenced from a protective protein identified in human gastric juice. Proposed mechanisms — based on animal research — include promoting angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), modulating nitric-oxide signaling, and reducing inflammation, which is why it's marketed around tissue and tendon repair.
What Research Actually Exists
The evidence base is overwhelmingly animal research — rat and mouse studies on gut, tendon, and wound healing. Human data is genuinely minimal: a small 2025 safety pilot gave an intravenous dose to just 2 healthy adults with no adverse effects reported, and a couple of other very small studies (roughly a dozen or so patients each) have looked at it for bladder pain and knee pain. There is no completed large-scale human clinical trial. This is a real research gap, not a technicality — claims of "proven safety" or "proven efficacy" in humans go well beyond what this evidence actually supports.
Current Legal & Regulatory Status
BPC-157 has never been FDA-approved for any human use. Its compounding status has
shifted more than once in 2026: the FDA had restricted it from compounding pharmacies
(its "Category 2" bulk substances list, citing safety-data and impurity concerns), and
that restriction was lifted effective April 22, 2026 when the nomination was
withdrawn. On July 23, 2026, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted
8-6 (with one abstention) to recommend adding BPC-157 to the list of substances
compounding pharmacies are formally permitted to use — but a favorable advisory vote is
a recommendation, not a rule change: compounding pharmacies cannot legally use BPC-157
under Section 503A until the FDA completes formal rulemaking, a process that typically
runs 8–24 months. In short: no FDA drug approval either way, and even the more limited
question of legal compounding access is still pending formal action. See our

Known & Theoretical Risks
Because robust human safety data doesn't exist, real risks — immune reactions, impurity-related harms, long-term effects — are essentially unstudied in people rather than ruled out. "Generally regarded as safe" marketing claims are not backed by the kind of human toxicology data that supports that phrase for an approved drug.
