MIND Diet
A Mediterranean-DASH hybrid designed specifically to support long-term brain health.
How It Works
MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, created
by Rush University researchers by hybridizing Mediterranean and DASH with extra emphasis on berries and
leafy greens specifically for brain health. It's scored on 15 food components:
10 to increase: green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, berries, beans and
legumes, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil, and wine (in moderation).
5 to limit: red meats, butter and stick margarine, cheese, pastries and sweets, and
fried or fast food.
Its signature emphasis versus plain Mediterranean or DASH is specific rather than general: berries
(particularly blueberries) and a daily green salad, rather than just "more fruit" and "more vegetables."
The Research
The original finding is striking, but it's important to see it alongside the one large randomized trial that followed it — which found a smaller effect than the observational data suggested.
Original cohort study: Morris MC, Tangney CC, Wang Y, et al. "MIND diet associated with reduced incidence of Alzheimer's disease," Alzheimer's & Dementia, 2015. Following ~923 older adults for about 4.5 years, the group with the highest MIND-diet adherence had a 53% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease than the group with the lowest adherence (this is the top-vs-bottom-tertile comparison in an adjusted model, not an unqualified population-wide figure — the middle-adherence group saw a 35% reduction). The complicating trial: Barnes LL, Dhana K, Liu X, et al. "Trial of the MIND Diet for Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Older Persons," New England Journal of Medicine, 2023. In this randomized trial of 604 older adults, both the MIND-diet group and the control-diet group followed mild calorie restriction — and changes in cognition and brain MRI measures after 3 years did not differ significantly between the two groups; both improved similarly. This directly complicates the 2015 finding and is worth knowing before treating MIND as proven protection against cognitive decline.

Additional research: Sawyer RP, Blair J, Shatz R, Manly JJ, Judd SE. "Association of Adherence to a MIND-Style Diet With the Risk of Cognitive Impairment and Decline in the REGARDS Cohort," Neurology, 2024. In a large biracial cohort, higher MIND-style adherence was associated with lower incident cognitive impairment, with a stronger effect in women and Black participants — again, observational.

Food Examples
Signature foods: blueberries and strawberries specifically (MIND's own scoring system
uses berries, and observational data points to blueberries most consistently), plus a daily green
salad — spinach, kale, romaine, or collards.
Also emphasized: other vegetables, nuts, beans and legumes, whole grains, fish,
poultry, and olive oil.
Limited: red meat, butter and stick margarine, cheese, pastries and sweets, fried and
fast food.
A Sample Day
Breakfast: oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts.
Lunch: spinach salad with beans and an olive oil vinaigrette.
Snack: a handful of almonds.
Dinner: baked salmon, a side of steamed kale, and (optionally) a small glass of wine.
Skip the butter, fried food, and pastries that day.
Who It Might Suit
Tends to suit people prioritizing long-term brain and cognitive health who want a sustainable, food-based pattern close to Mediterranean or DASH but with a sharper focus on berries and greens. Its causal certainty is weaker than Mediterranean or DASH's cardiovascular evidence, though — the one major randomized trial (NEJM 2023) found no significant cognitive advantage over a calorie-controlled control diet over 3 years, so it may not suit anyone specifically looking for RCT-backed proof of cognitive protection, or whose primary goal is weight management or cardiovascular risk (where Mediterranean and DASH have the stronger trial evidence).
